A little Lego History

LEGO (Translated “Play Well”) in is an extremely popular line of building block toy manufactured by the Lego Group or LEGO Group Australia, a privately held company based in Billund, Denmark. The company began manufacturing interlocking toy bricks in the year of1949, since which a global subculture has developed, supporting Lego movies, games, competitions, cartoon character, Harry Potter themed LEGO, Star Wars Characters even Batman and Indiana Jones have their own range of toys in the companies outfit of products. This popularity is not only for toys but has spread into five Lego-themed amusement parks.

Lego Bricks

The work of the Lego Group began in a small workshop belonging to Ole Kirk Christiansen (7 April 1891 – 11 March 1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark. He began making wooden toys in 1932 and later formed a company, which he named “LEGO” meaning “Play Well” in Danish. After learning the craft of toy making and working exclusively with wood, he expanded into producing plastic toys. It wasn’t until 1949 when Lego began producing the now famous interlocking coloured bricks, calling them "Automatic Binding Bricks".

Lego Australia

While the LEGO Group was founded in 1932 in Denmark, it wasn’t until 1962 that the first LEGO brick landed on our shores in Australia. Today Lego is widely available throughout Australia and can be found in toyshops all around the country or online through Toysie.com.au.
