The work of the Lego Group began in a small workshop belonging to Ole Kirk Christiansen (7 April 1891 – 11 March 1958), a carpenter from Billund, Denmark. He began making wooden toys in 1932 and later formed a company, which he named “LEGO” meaning “Play Well” in Danish. After learning the craft of toy making and working exclusively with wood, he expanded into producing plastic toys. It wasn’t until 1949 when Lego began producing the now famous interlocking coloured bricks, calling them "Automatic Binding Bricks".
